Cervical Screening

Cervical screening is not a test for cancer.  It is a method of preventing cancer by detecting very early abnormalities in the cells of your cervix that if left could lead to cancer in the future.

Every woman aged 25-64 is entitled to a cervical screening test every 3-5 years. The frequency of screening is as follows –

Aged 25-49 years                    Every 3 years

Aged 50-64 years                    Every 5 years

Aged 65 years +                      Are only screened if they have not had a smear since aged 50 or recent abnormal results.

The frequency of your screening might be increased if any abnormalities are found, but this will be discussed with you at the time.
